5. Validation and Lifecycle Management

6. AI Vendor and Third-Party Risk Management
For most life sciences organizations, a significant portion of AI exposure comes not from internally developed models but from third-party AI vendors and AI features embedded in existing enterprise platforms. Platform vendors such as Microsoft, Salesforce, Veeva, Box, and ServiceNow continue to embed AI directly into their products, sometimes activating features as part of routine updates inside validated environments.

In some cases, AI features may activate as part of product updates, creating new compliance exposure inside validated environments if organizations are not actively monitoring them.
At the same time, regulatory expectations are becoming more concrete and the enforcement timeline is no longer theoretical. The EU AI Act’s high-risk AI system obligations under Annex III take effect on August 2, 2026, along with transparency requirements and mandatory AI regulatory sandboxes in every Member State. A February 2026 final guidance on cybersecurity in medical devices further reinforces the tightening nexus between AI, cybersecurity, and quality systems.
ISO 42001 is also shaping how organizations think about AI management systems and governance infrastructure, providing a recognized standard for organizations seeking to demonstrate structured AI governance to regulators, auditors, and partners.
